From the Mouths of Grandkids

GRANDKIDS

1. She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter,
as she'd done many times before.. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Gramma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!"
I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye.....

2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair.. As she heard the children getting more and
more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings.
As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?"

4. A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire, it hung from a tree in our front yard We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

5. My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are
alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?''...... "You're both old," he replied.

6. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read."

7. I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her.
I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these, yourself!"

8. When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies
followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."

9. When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure..." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised, "mine says I'm 4 to 6."

10. A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what?
We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool.. "That's interesting," she said, "how do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and
add 'es'."

11. Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman
came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confidently. "It means carrying a child."

12. A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past.
Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties. "They use
him to keep crowds back," said one child. "No," said
another. "He's just for good luck."
A third child brought the argument to a close."They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrants."

13. A 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived.
Oh," he said, "she lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then, when we're done having her visit, we take her back to the airport."

14. Grandpa is the smartest man on earth! He teaches me good good things, but I don't get to see him enough to get as smart as him!

15.. My Grandparents are funny, when they bend over you hear gas leaks, and they blame their dog.

I hope this brings as many smiles and chuckles to you as it did me.

LAUGHTER IS NECESSARY FOR SURVIVAL

IT IS A MUST THAT YOU READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH THIS EMAIL FOR THE FULL EXPERIENCE TO BE UNDERSTOOD. LAUGHTER IS A REQUIREMENT TO GET THE FULL BENEFIT.

The Importance of Walking

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old
to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing
home at $7000 per month.

I like long walks,
especially when they are taken
by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking
is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I'm doing..

I joined a health club last year,
spent about 400 bucks.
Haven't lost a pound.
Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise',
I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

The advantage of exercising every day
is so when you die, they'll say,
'Well, she looks good doesn't she.'

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,
start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise
the last few years,......
just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older,
because there's a lot more information in our heads.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

AND

Every time I start thinking too much
about how I look,
I just find a Happy Hour
and by the time I leave,
I look just fine.

You could run this over to your friends
But just e-mail it to them

Without laughter your belly
button will unscrew and your
butt will fall off.
Really.... It's true

Fall is for Changes

This is such a wonderful time of year, as the weather is cooling down, the color of the leaves are changing bringing out wonderful scenery. This is also a time that some people begin watching their weight or cut back on their food intake as not to overindulge for the upcoming holidays. For me, my weight has been an issue for me because there is a long history of obesity from both my mother's and my father's families and I have seen first hand how it has affected lives of the entire family. Both of my grandmothers had diabetes and both my mother and father faced the challenge of diabetes as they grew to the retirement age. After my father died at the age of 62 from complications of diabetes, I knew that was not a condition I ever wanted to have and I also wanted to live my life to the fullest.

I did not have a weight issued until after I had given birth to my first child at the age 19, my documented weight went from 137 to 217 on delivery day. I was profoundly depressed when the weight would not come off. I knew then the fight was on. When my daughter was three months old I started my own exercise regiment of walking, common workout exercises of 1 to 2 hours a day in order to loose the weight. Then when my daughter was 13 months old, I again was pregnant with my second child, but this time I continued my work our routine and for the entire pregnancy only gained 16 pounds and 8 pounds 6.5 ounces was all baby. By the time my son was 3 months old I had lost all the weight I had gained and continued to loose unwanted pounds until I was back to that 137 pounds I was content at being. However, there were people who told me I was to thin since I was 5 foot 11 inches in height.

That was 27 years ago, and many changes have happened along the way. Now I have to say my control on my weight has been a roller coaster ride. I have bounced around from 137 at my lowest to my heaviest 289. I reached my highest weight after the death of my brother, I found myself in a depression that my comfort was food and sleeping. It was not until my son told me that he and his girlfriend were expecting a baby did I snap out of it.

I took a long look in the mirror and did not like what I saw and I knew no one but myself could do anything about it. I knew that I have tried every fad diet that was on the market and with each I would lose 10 to 20 pounds and that was where it stopped and it was frustrating. It was even more frustrating when I would go to the doctor and they would say increase exercise and decrease my food intake. This made mo sense to me since my exercise consisted of power walking 8 miles a day, and my daily diet included a SlimFast shake for breakfast and dinner with a salad for lunch. So needless to say the advice I was getting did not improve my weight lose. I then took everything about my weight lose program into my own hands and I was determined to loose the weight and without loosing my health along the way.

I have a treasured friend that lives in South Africa that I had told of my frustration of not loosing the weight that was I felt holding me back from being my best. He in turn sent me a diet that a physician friend of his that specializes in cancer treatments gave to him. This diet consists of mainly fruit, yes that is right fruit. I was instructed to have a serving of uncooked fruit before every meal or as the first course of my meals. I thought this was crazy, but for me it was not a hard thing since I am one who loves fruit. All fruit is good as long as it is not cooked. Also for between meal snacks was to be fruit, and before bed snack was to be fruit if there was a need for one.

May 01, 2010 I started my diet with the fruit concept added, within the first 3 weeks I was averaging 1 to 2 pounds of weight loss daily. I did away with all fried foods, fatty foods, and as a personal choice very little meat. To supplement my diet, I cleaned out my cabinets of all weight loss pills and instead of wasting the money I spent on them I decided to rotate them in with my food diet. I had the Hoodia diet plan, the Syntra5 plan and the Ultimate Twin Cleanse diet and the Acai berry diet, and the Slim Quick plan. After I had gathered all these onto my dining room table I estimated that I had invested hundreds of dollars in all these plans that each one alone did not accomplish my weight loss goal.

This following plan is working for me, and I am not saying it will not work for everyone, but it is working for me and I am documenting my diary of my diet and weight loss program and how it is working for me. As I stated I started this at my highest weight of 289 pounds, with a goal to loose 140 pounds in a healthy manner. I began by following a diet high in fruit, yogurt, vegetables, minimal meat, bread, rice, and potatoes and no fried foods at all. Each day I would take a different diet plan pills as directed on their bottles along with my vitamins and pre-menopause treatment. Within the first 30 days, I was loosing 2 pounds daily on average. Doctors and weight management professionals will tell you do not weigh everyday, but I found weighing every morning and every night helped me to see how which foods I was eating would support my weight loss or would increase my weight. This was the key for me, I would write in my diary what I ate each meal, everyday and weighing everyday I was able to see what foods were best for me and which diet supplement was working the best at bringing the weight off.

Today, October 03, 2010, I am weighing 232 pounds and I am still averaging 1 to 2 pounds a day, the only time I see my weight have a high fluctuation is the week prior to my menstrual cycle, the week during, and the week after. I have found that the week prior I have gained upwards to six pounds, then during the week of I will loose the access from the week before along with as much as 3 - 5 extra pounds, and finally the week after I have continued to maintain the average of 1 to 3 pounds.

The positive aspects I have found with this weight loss program I have designed for myself is that it is working for me and I cannot say that it will work for everyone, but I am healthier than I have been for the last three years, I have no signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, or cholesterol problems. I will continue to use this plan and modify it to maintain my weight loss until I have reached my goal. Once I have reached my goal I will share my documentation of any and all modifications so others can benefit from my diet and research that I am doing along the way of this journey.

We have all heard that once you pass that 40 year mark everything gets harder, I have to say that for me it has not gotten harder as my determination has gotten stronger. I have found that I spent my 20's and 30's focusing on being the mother to my children that they needed me to be, and during my 40's I was a first time grandmother and I was assisting my daughter parent my grandson. Today, at 49 years young, grandmother of 2 beautiful grandsons, I find myself at my healthiest point in over 20 years, and I am finding pleasures and peace of mind that I did not realize I would be having at this point in my life. I hope that this will give to those that have been wanting to know how I have been loosing my weight and looking younger than most of my friends my age, as well as have so much more energy then my children have and they complain they cannot keep up with me. Life has been hard, but I have received so many blessings that I can honestly say life has been good.

Going Green

Every day we hear more and more about how we need to do our share in preserving the earth by doing and going more "Green." I have to say I agree because if we do not do what we can to save the wonders of nature of this world we will not have an glorious place to live and share with our children or grandchildren.

Today I took the time to check out the various alternative power sources for my house and believe it or not I am seriously thinking along the line of getting my personal wind turbine as well as solar panels to have applied to my roof. In making such an investment will save me at a minimum of $80.00 to $200.00 per month on my power bills. That would be enough savings that would pay me back for the initial investment over a twelve year period. That may sound like a long time for an invest to be repaid and to begin to generate a gain in profit from that point on. However, I am taking into consideration that the price of energy is on a continuous upward climb and no knows when or if it will ever come down. That would be like in five years what I currently pay for my monthly power bill of $197.00 could climb to well over $300.00 per month. But by doing my part of going "Green" and installing a wind turbine along with solar panels I would be saving month after month and might even have the power company paying me for the use of my turbine or solar panels. Yes the initial expense would be upward to $30,000.00, but if the power company comes back and pays me for the energy I generate and my system pays for itself over 12 years as well as generate an additional income for myself then why are there not many other people taking the same objective as I am?

I can purchase a wind turbine that will allow for my surrounding neighbors to be connected to my energy source and they too can save money on the power bill and what they would have to pay me would be a drop in the bucket compared to the money they will save over their first year of use.

I am including a web link so you can go and check out some of the very information that I researched so that you can have an idea how important it is to consider becoming green as I have.

HERE'S A GOOD WAY TO LOOK AT YOUR HANDS.

HERE IS A GOOD WAY TO LOOK AT YOUR HANDS. (MALE OR FEMALE)
NEVER QUITE THOUGHT OF IT THIS WAY BEFORE

GRANDMA'S HANDS A must read thru to the end

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench.
She did not move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands.

When I sat down beside her, she did not acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head, and looked at me and smiled. 'Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking,' she said in a clear voice strong.

‘I didn’t mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,' I explained to her.

'Have you ever looked at your hands,' she asked.
'I mean really looked at your hands?'

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:

'Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands though wrinkled
shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life.

'They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor.

They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots.
They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war.

'They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world, I was married and loved someone special.

They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse.

'They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.

They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried
and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works, real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to
fold in prayer.

'These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life.

But more importantly, it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His
side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of God.'

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God.

I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

When you receive this, say a prayer for the person who sent it to you, and watch God's answer to prayer work in your life. Let us continue praying
for one another.

Personal Suggestions

I hope you are having a great day as I am sitting here this afternoon enjoying a rain shower move through from the Gulf of Mexico.  It is so nice how a short fifteen minute shower can cool things of until the high level of humidity comes crashing down.  One thing is for sure, if you are concerned about having a high maintenance hair style, the gulf coast is not the place for it as the humidity will cut it down in as little as thirty minutes in the weather.  Maybe that is why I now keep mine long and straight, very fitting.

Speaking of styles, I am not bragging by any means, but I have women ask me all the time how I keep my skin looking so young as I do not have wrinkles or fine lines, and no sagging skin or dark circles around my eyes.  Well all I can usually say is it must have been in my genes, but realistically I am not one to spend a lot of time or money on makeup or designer creams, and have no desire to have some doctor cut on my face to aid in getting the lift of a younger look.  What I can share is that I do not use bar soap on my face, my main facial cleanser is my own homemade mixture of Wintergreen Isopropyl  Rubbing Alcohol and Witch Hazel.  I mix them in a balance of half and half and it is great for removing makeup, re-freshening my skin, or a quick wipe on cotton will take away any excess oils.  As a day cream under my makeup (when I do wear it) I use Vitamin E Cream, it is quick absorbent and it is light and it also keeps the elasticity in my skin.  As my night cream after cleaning my face with my personal mixture I apply a light coverage of Retinol Cream, which is a mixture of Vitamin E and other natural ingredients.  I know your next question will be, "does it cost a lot?"  That answer has to be no, as for the Wintergreen Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol and Witch Hazel, I purchase that from the Dollar Tree where everything is only one dollar.  The Vitamin E Cream and Retinol Cream I purchase from Puritan's Pride where you can buy one and get one free and the cost is under four dollars each or two dollars give or take because of tax.

Now, I hope that since I have shared my personal skin care products, that should you decide to give them a try, you will find them as productive for you as I have for me.  Another remedy that you might find somewhat strange but it really works, if you have those brown age spots coming on your arms or legs, rub in some plain yogurt on them and they will fade away.  There is no smell, or stickiness, or anything like that, but after doing that everyday for about two weeks you will see the dark spots lighten up.    The last tip I will pass on for today is that right after shaving your legs, before they dry put some gel baby oil on and rub it in to save the moisture in your skin and there will be no razor burn or scaling look to your legs.  In fact once they have been oiled and that absorbs you legs have a youthful shine to them.  Every night before I go to bed I lotion my arms and legs with cocoa butter and Shea butter cream that I purchase separately and mix them together as to have the same balance of each product.  The cocoa butter aids in keeping your extremities moist from dry air and the Shea butter firms your skin to improve the tone.

There you have my personal secrets of why I look the way I do with no wrinkles or fine lines.  I cannot say that it is one thing in general or a mix of all of them together, but it is true at the age of 49, I am told all the time I do not look a day over 35.  Some people have told my daughter and we look more like sisters that mother and daughter.  Kira does not know if they are saying she looks old or if I am youthful, but it does give my ego a boost that keeps me smiling.  Have a great weekend.

Keeping Memories

It is beginning to seem like fall is coming in around the corner.  My mother lives in Oklahoma, and at her age she can be quite feisty when she wants to. At least that is what mom tells me during our daily telephone conversations.  "It's getting a bit nippy."  Most days as she has for her adult life is up every morning by 4:30 AM, if she oversleeps she will be up by 5:30 AM.  She has been blessed in her life as she was the second oldest of nine children and to date still has five living brothers and one sister that she tries to keep in touch with on a regular basis.

Everyday before I get busy with my day, I will call her just to see how she is doing and keep her up to day on what my kids and grandson are doing and how the oil spill clean up is going.  Then we discuss politics, men, doctors and how they do not listen when she wants them to change her medication or take her off of something that is not doing her any good.  It always seems that with every discussion and conversation I find that the gap that was once so wide between us is becoming less wide and we are coming to a common understanding of why our differences kept us apart and so far away from one another.  I think about her being 81 years of age, going to be 82 September 30 and that I have been blessed to have her in my life this long.

My best friend lost her mother (Dr. H. Wilson) five years ago and Dr. Wilson had been such a mother figure to me that I find myself missing her everyday and there is not a time goes by when Karen and I talk that we do not bring up something that her mother would tell us about mothering our children, and she was always right. I am always thankful for having the privileged of knowing Dr. Wilson as she is a part of Alabama Medical history as being the first Black American Woman Doctor to be given the right to practice medicine in the state.  She was a woman of powerful wisdom and she never saw a person for the color of their skin but for the goodness in their heart.  A strong lesson she taught me, and the other was to open my heart and forgive the past.  To let go of the issues we cannot change, but can improve as I move forward.  I am thankful for those lessons Dr. Wilson taught me and gave me the shove to put into practice, which lead me to calling my mom on a daily basis.

If not for Dr. Wilson giving me that shove I may not have found hidden in the back of my memory all those good memories that I had being around my mom when I was a child.  I grew up always knowing that my mother's favorite child was my sister, and I was always the last person when it came to having any of her time.  Now, even though there is 2,000 miles between us, she is next to me every morning during our telephone conversations and it will be those memories that will get me through life to share with my kids and grandchildren as the mother she was to me. There has been so much lost time, conversations that should have been, that never happened, but we have now moved beyond those unspoken conversations and she is still mom and I am still her daughter, all grown up with kids and grand kids of my own.  The memories keep coming day in and day out some exciting, happy, and some discouraging, upsetting, and yet we continue to move forward and the sun will set tonight just as the sun will rise tomorrow.
